Geo-Drill project partners, Gerosion hosted the EU ambassador to Iceland, Lucie Samcova-Hall Allen, at their facility in Árleynir.
The focus of the visit was to discuss the climate and energy framework in Europe as well as Gerosion’s associated EU funded projects.
The EU-wide key targets for 2030 are cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, an increased share of renewable energy, and energy efficiency improvements.
Dr Jan Prikryl and Dr Kristjan F. Alexandersson presented how the Horizon 2020 Geo-Drill and GeoSmart projects are working to help achieve these targets.
The Geo-Drill project consortium are developing novel and cost-effective drilling technologies, primarily for geothermal systems, with the project’s novel drilling hammer scheduled to be tested this spring.
GeoSmart, meanwhile, revolves around innovations that help to improve the flexibility and efficiency of geothermal heat and power systems; innovations which are currently being implemented at two demonstration sites, with the project aiming to reduce costs for CHP (combined heat and power) generation.
Both of these EU-funded projects have the overall aim of helping to improve green energy generation and energy security - topics that are critical in the current geopolitical landscape.
